Identifying Unresolved Conflicts.
When working with my ABD clients who have suddenly stopped progressing, we always start by looking at the circumstances surrounding the derailment. In more than 90 percent of the cases, the derailment can be directly related to a negative comment or feeling of frustration/conflict with an advisor or peer. Many times, ABD’s don’t even recognize that they are reacting to this event, and so the derailment feels mysterious and unexplainable. If you have ever felt your motivation for your project suddenly dip or disappear, try thinking through the events that led up to this change. In most cases, this dip in motivation will be related to feeling criticized or in conflict around your work.
