Imposter Syndrome

Sorry for missing yesterday’s entry- we got hit with an unexpected snowstorm and the whole day got delayed due to traffic problems… and I didn’t remember to blog until after midnight. Oops!… Today’s entry: Imposter syndrome: that feeling you have that you’re somehow not the 100% genuine article- marked by fear of being "found out" or "exposed" for not being as smart and capable as you should be by now. One of the greatest personal challenges of higher education, in my opinion, is needing to overcome our fear of being found out as an imposter. I think "imposter syndrome" arises because we are almost continually evaluated, and we start to believe all the external feedback and take it as our own. A good way to combat imposter syndrome? Start to acknowledge yourself as a whole person- one who has both strengths and weaknesses. You’re never just one or the other. A realistic, grounded, centered self view is the best way to stay connected with yourself, no matter how good (or bad) the external feedback is.
