Ask for help before it gets too bad.
One of the saddest and most disappointing aspects of being a dissertation coach is when I’m contacted by ABD’s who are, literally, days and minutes away from being asked to leave their programs. They contact me, ashamed and anxious, and wonder if they can write the entire dissertation in just the 3 days between now and when they fail out. If you haven’t been able to write it despite years and years of effort, how did you let it get this bad before seeking help? Don’t let this happen to you. Small problems and tiny avoidances can grow exponentially if left unchecked. If you are not making the kind of progress you want to make- at any point in your dissertation process- take BIG action to get back on track. Make yourself accountable to someone so you can start progressing again. By catching small problems before they become too big, you are more likely to finish the dissertation without suffering too much to do it. There are resources out there to assist you. But you have to be willing to ask for help before it gets too bad.
