Choose a topic that interests you.

When you’re considering your options for a dissertation topic, pick a topic that interests you- and one that you can see yourself committing to for at least two years. While I believe that most dissertations can be written and finished within a year, giving yourself a two year window is a good way to assess your interest level over the long haul. While your general topic area will often be in alignment with your advisor and committee, make sure that you choose a topic which allows you the freedom to explore areas of interest for you. In doing so, you’ll feel more connected to your project and more motivated to see it through.
