Do you need a change of scene?
As we wind down 2004 and start looking ahead for 2005, it’s a good idea to consider your office/work space in terms of whether it’s still working well for you. Ideally, your dissertation work space will be quiet, and will include ample flat surfaces for writing, spreading out materials, etc. You’ll have good lighting, and it will be out of the flow of normal everyday house traffic. You’ll be able to shut the door, and should have your reference material in easy reach. Most importantly, your office/work space should be comfortable and soothing- if it’s too cluttered, too loud, or too full of distractions, you’ll be spending a lot of time in there, but not getting much done. Many of my clients enjoy having a window in their office- one that looks out over the backyard or some tranquil scene. As you plan for next year, why not freshen up your work space and give yourself a change of scene. Sometimes, this, alone, can re-energize you and help you rediscover motivation for your project.
