What to Do if You Are Addicted to the Struggle
So if you have been struggling in the dissertation process for any length of time; and you have not taken a step back, gotten a broader perspective, and taken a look at whether you’re working harder or working smarter, that would be a good step to take today.
If you find that you’re working smarter, than keep doing more of the same because when you find something that works, you want to do more of it.
If you find yourself working harder, it’s time to ask yourself some different questions. Here’s a hint: The answers are not going to be found in working even harder. If the question is–How can I finish this chapter most easily? The answer is not going to be– Well I’ll stay up really late for the next five nights, not get any sleep, drive myself crazy, and then I’ll finish it.
If you’ve already tried that multiple times and it hasn’t worked, don’t keep doing it. If you find yourself saying—Ok, how can I complete this more easily? Notice in yourself if there’s any little voices or little stories that pop up and say–There’s no way that you could finish this more easily or more quickly, and who are you to think that you can do it that way?
Because those are keys or clues to what might be holding you back. If you find yourself making the dissertation process harder in any part or element, take a step back and ask yourself–How can I get this done as easily and as happily as possible?
The quality of your solutions rises in direct proportion to the quality of your questions.
