You Can’t Create from Negativity

You can’t create from negativity. This means that if you’re feeling angry, sad, overwhelmed, lonely, bored, disappointed, or any other bad feeling, it is going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to create from this space of negativity. Your thoughts will feel jumbled, your writing will be unclear, and critical thinking will be difficult. Research has shown that a positive mood is linked to greater access to various parts of the brain; meaning, that, literally, the brain ’shuts down’ a bit when you are feeling negative or upset. This can make it seem like you have no options when you really do. Your best solution? Try to feel better, first, and THEN start working. Or, if that’s not happening fast enough, focus on tasks you can easily complete: filing, typing up the bibliography, and other rote/simple tasks like this. Sometimes, you need to make progress any way you can, and it’s better to save creative work for when you’re feeling more positive.
