Overwhelmed? Narrow Your Focus.
The concept of overwhelm is one that frequently arises in the dissertation process. This is not surprising. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you’re faced with such a large and open ended project- and when the only timelines, in general, are those you create for yourself.
In life, as in the dissertation, it’s easy to get overwhelmed when you just look at the big picture. The big picture is just so….big.
Like any other life task, the dissertation is easier when you break it down into steps. In the members area of the dissertation coaching site, we talk about how to approach tasks on a weekly basis. Essentially, you focus on just 3 things you want to accomplish, and then do them.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, it’s time to narrow your focus. Think about your dissertation. What are the next three actions you can take to move you forward?
Then take those actions.
Select three more, and do them.
Sometimes, it’s a lot more difficult to get moving than it is to keep going.
