How much perfectionism is too much?

by Dr. Rachna D. Jain

Perfectionism is a term used to define a state of being unhappy with anything that isn’t perfect (i.e. doesn’t meet very high standards). While you do need to put together a quality dissertation, there is a point at which perfectionism becomes too much. How do you know the difference between healthy focus and negative perfectionism? First- you can know by the way you feel. If you feel excited and energized by your work and feel like your extra attention is moving it to a new, and effective place, then you’re probably in healthy focus. If you feel overwhelmed, burdened, and like you are "going over the same old ground, over and over"- you probably have moved into negative perfectionism. If you are putting in many hours, but don’t have much to show for it, check yourself for healthy focus that has become negative perfectionism.
